Dr. Willem Smuts Pr.Sci. Nat. is a seasoned geologist with over 23 years of experience in research, exploration, mining and consulting across Africa. He holds a Masters in sedimentology and a PhD from Pretoria University and has authored over 79 scientific papers.

Willem began his career at the Geological Survey of South Africa before moving into CBM exploration with AMOCO in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. He later served as Regional General Manager for Halliburton’s Landmark Graphics, managing Sub-Saharan operations from Nigeria.

A recognized industry leader, Willem was the editor of African Mining and Mining Mirror and has chaired the Africa Mining Congress since 2006. His influence extends to being a regular speaker at international conferences.

Currently, he consults on coal, CBM, and precious metal exploration projects across Africa. Willem also helped launch Inside Mining, a forward-thinking publication and mining news platform, showcasing his ongoing commitment to the industry’s advancement.
