Course Objectives

In this 2 Day Masterclass, participants will:

• Blend legal, financial and technical elements in a straightforward way

• Gain real-world knowledge! The workshop will draw on a database of some 100 PPAs from across the world and all types of power generation technologies

• Discuss recent case studies from around the world;

• Embark on exercises of risk allocation; and

• Revise real-world PPA clauses to dig out the gist of this mission-critical project agreement

The trainer is an independent advisor with 20 years of experience in the power & renewable sector focusing on power project financing and PPAs in emerging markets.

He worked with leading IPP investors, finance institutions and governments across Africa, such as AfDB AFC, IFC, FMO, OFID, Norfund, Scatec, Engie, Enel, EDF, ESKOM, Actis, Globeleq, Aldwych, EGENCO, Oanda, Mainstream, ABSA, Central Bank of Nigeria, Total, AES, Sumitomo Mitsui, CNOOC, KPLC, Rand Merchant Bank. He is a part-time lecturer at IESE Business School and Frankfurt School of Finance.

According to the IEA – “More than 70% of the $2Trillion required each year in energy supply investment either comes from state-directed entities or receives full or partial revenue guarantee.” This revenue guarantee is typically offered as a PPA.

The Bankability of PPAs is especially challenging as most electricity demand growth takes place in emerging countries with the offtaker’s creditworthiness at least questionable.

This highly specific course aims to introduce the legal, financial and technical structure and hidden pitfalls of PPA as a means for Sellers and Buyers to minimise their exposure to volatility of price and volume.
