Course Objectives
In this 2 Day Masterclass, participants will:
Estimate annual energy production from a solar photovoltaic system with confidence - a crucial input into financial models.
Understand the meaning behind the numbers on a PVsyst report:
Are there issues with the way the yield estimation was carried out?
Are there issues with the design of the system?
Does an operational system perform in line with expectations?
What makes a yield estimation bankable?
Communicate the effects of shading caused by horizon or nearby obstacles such as houses or other rows of solar panels on the output of the system.
Optimize the energy yield of a photovoltaic system by changing the geometry or the electrical configuration of the system
Your Trainer
Joachim Baumgaertner is a specialist management consultant in the renewable energy sector, advising technology start-ups, growth companies, financial institutions and strategy consultants on a broad range of issues across the whole clean energy value chain, including complementary areas of business planning, technology strategy, financing and carbon management.
He is involved in the project development of utility-scale solar power, solar greenhouses and waste-to-energy plants worldwide, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana, Puerto Rico, and India.
Joachim has a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Stuttgart. He has conducted research into off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems with solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, batteries and Diesel engines at the Centre for Renewable Energy in Loughborough where he was awarded an MPhil. He gained an MBA with Distinction from the London Business School with a particular focus on Finance and Entrepreneurship.

In this interactive workshop, we discuss the physical and technical context of the components and effects such as horizon, nearby buildings, lightning rods or ageing, and explain how they are implemented in PVsyst. We show how to use PVsyst to produce an energy yield analysis and how it can be used to optimize the system layout, orientation and components. We will be working through case studies of grid-connected as well as an off-grid system.
